If you have a college age student, your back to school checklist has changed drastically.  Gone are the days of 24 count Crayola crayons, #2 pencils, blunt tip scissors and glue sticks.  Nowadays your list may include a new laptop, a mini-fridge and a used vehicle. Insurance was never an issue when you were buying notebooks and lunchboxes in August, but now with large purchases being shipped off to a new dorm room or apartment you may want to add it to your checklist.

Renters insurance may be a huge benefit for your new college bound scholar and one less thing for parents to worry about with their child’s new independence.  Protecting personal items, whether in a dorm or sharing a house with other students, is a proactive move to ensure that any impact from a loss is minimized.  With independence comes responsibility and protecting their belongings can teach positive lessons for your adult in training.

One of the major purchases you may be facing is one that allows your child visits home.  Auto insurance for that vehicle should reflect your child’s new zip code, where it will be driven the majority of the time.  If the vehicle is solely for trips back and forth home then check into a low mileage discount for rarely used vehicles.  Also, many companies will continue the good student discount for college students and if they are not taking the car with them to college there may be discounts for that

College brings with it quite the change to the pocketbook and probably quite the change to the heartstrings as well.  Making sure that your child is covered properly will ease your worries and will help to teach your child responsibility in their new adult world.  Talk to us about what changes are in store for your family so we can help to make sure you are as prepared as possible for the school year ahead!
